Every Fan Interaction Should Build Enterprise Value

Every concert creates two assets. One appears on the income statement. The other rarely appears anywhere.

For decades, the live entertainment industry has become exceptionally good at measuring the first. Ticket sales. Merchandise revenue. Attendance. VIP packages. Revenue per head. These metrics matter. They determine whether a show was financially successful.

But they tell us very little about the long-term value created by that event. The second asset is the fan relationship. And over time, it may prove to be the more valuable of the two.

Fandom is unlike almost any other consumer relationship. It creates communities that span generations. It inspires people to travel, collect, subscribe, advocate, and return year after year. Fans don't simply buy products—they invest emotionally in artists, teams, and brands.

Every artist, creator, and sports organization says they want to build deeper relationships with their fans. Yet many still operate almost entirely transactionally. They measure revenue per head but don't know who made the purchase. They sell thousands of tickets but never identify the fans attending the show. They celebrate millions of social media followers without actually owning the relationship. Every event generates revenue. Far fewer generate lasting enterprise value.

Consider a touring artist performing 100 shows each year to an average audience of 2,500 fans. If the average fan spends $20 on a ticket (net to the artist) and another $10 on merchandise, the tour generates approximately $75,000 in revenue per show, or $7.5 million annually. After paying the crew, transportation, production, merchandising, and operating expenses, the artist may net approximately $2.5 million. By almost every traditional measure, that's a successful business.

But now ask a different question. What happens after the show?

If that artist consistently identifies and builds relationships with just 1,000 fans per night, they create 100,000 new fan relationships every year. Those relationships don't end when the lights go down. They create opportunities for future merchandise purchases, memberships, VIP experiences, exclusive content, special events, and future tours. More importantly, they become an appreciating business asset. Twenty-five years later, that same touring strategy could result in millions of known fan relationships—a strategic asset that may ultimately become more valuable than the merchandise sold along the way.

This is where I believe our industry has an opportunity to rethink how it defines success. For decades, we've optimized transactions. The next decade will belong to organizations that optimize relationships. Every fan interaction should accomplish two things:

Generate today's revenue + Increase tomorrow's enterprise value.

These are not competing objectives. They're complementary ones. The organizations that intentionally build both will create stronger businesses, more resilient revenue streams, and deeper fan loyalty over time.

A tour bus eventually wears out. Production equipment depreciates. Merchandise gets sold. Even hit songs eventually leave the charts. But a trusted relationship with a fan can appreciate for decades.

Perhaps the most valuable thing created at a live event isn't the ticket or the T-shirt. It's the opportunity to build a relationship that lasts long after the encore. The live entertainment industry has spent decades asking one question: "How much revenue did we create tonight?"

The next generation of leaders will ask another: "How much stronger is our relationship with our fans because of tonight?"

Because every fan interaction creates two assets.

Today's revenue.

And tomorrow's enterprise value.
